In 2024, the Common Art Center hosted an exhibition at Beijing’s renowned 798 Art Block titled “The Multidimensional of Image Group Exhibition.” Curated by Guiming Li, the show featured artworks from 10 artists, exploring the evolution of human imagery and highlighted the distinct beauty and character of each image type. UNFOLD PLANE is invited by Guiming Li to design the event space, challenging conventional display methods—especially for digital art—by moving beyond traditional wall or pedestal presentations.
A deep dive into the history of image art reveals that images have evolved through three stages—manual, analog, and digital—with ongoing iterations. As visual art has transformed over time, its presentation has also evolved. Today, digital art thrives as a medium continually reshaped by technological advancements and innovative tools.
Reflecting the exhibition’s theme, traditional static artworks were deliberately hung on the walls, while dynamic pieces were integrated into interactive installations. An interactive display system for these dynamic works was constructed using aluminum extrusion framing and a rod sliding system as key materials. These basic industrial components were reassembled into a series of installation artworks that, when combined with the artists’ creations, form an engaging interactive installation for digital works. This approach allows the artworks and display mechanisms to complement one another, exploring the exciting potential of a medium that fuses virtual and physical elements.
